Mesothelioma Center Review – University of Arizona

Mesothelioma Center Review – University of Arizona

university of arizona mesotheliomaThe University of Arizona’s Cancer Center is one of only 45 comprehensive cancer facilities in the country according to the National Cancer Institute. Mesothelioma care at the University of Arizona Cancer Center’s Thoracic Oncology Clinic is managed by a team of specialists through the hospital’s wide network of clinicians. Patients receive numerous services related to their cancer treatment including diagnosis, treatment and enrollment in clinical trials supported by the center’s various research programs.

The University of Arizona treats patients with advanced surgical techniques and state-of-the-art radiation therapies. One of the advanced techniques that clinicians have used is known as TomoTherapy. TomoTherapy delivers intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) through computed tomography in a single machine to achieve better accuracy while preventing damage to surrounding structures. Clinicians also rely on radiosurgery to deliver high-doses of targeted radiation to destroy tumors in a noninvasive manner.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center is home to several leading clinicians in the fields of lung cancer and mesothelioma. The head of the Lung Cancer Program, Dr. Linda Garland, M.D., has been involved in the development of new and promising therapies to treat cancers of the chest. The team focuses on treatment options that attack mesothelioma on a molecular level. Dr. Garland has spearheaded clinical trials with novel targeted agents for mesothelioma patients with late-stage disease. She is also involved in chemoprevention efforts at the center in various clinical trials.

Dr. Garland has collaborated with thoracic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Daniel, M.D., to perform a range of groundbreaking procedures and treatments. Dr. Daniel was a thoracic surgical resident under renowned surgeon, Dr. David Sugarbaker, M.D., at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In 2010, Dr. Daniel performed the first extrapleural pneumonectomy in the Southern Arizona region. This procedure, which simultaneously removes the tumor, lung, diaphragm and covering of the heart, may increase the odds of survival for certain patients and lower the incidence of infection. Dr. Daniel was able to construct a new pericardium from an artificial material during the surgery. This was the first time such a procedure was performed. Dr. Daniel has performed this surgery on other mesothelioma patients since then.

Research and clinical trials are an important aspect of treatment at the Cancer Center. The Cancer Center focuses on understanding the cellular basis of cancer in its efforts to discover treatments that can reduce mortality rates in the most aggressive cancers, such as mesothelioma. Clinical trials are available for patients with various stages of cancers such as mesothelioma. There are trials to test novel treatments and new drug therapies. Trials are also geared toward improving diagnostic procedures and identifying cancer and other health issues. For patients with chronic medical conditions, the Cancer Center provides trials aimed at enhancing quality of life.
