Starting out in Canada, Gorenstein earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1983, where he also completed his residency. He then moved on to a fellowship at the Ontario Cancer Institute in 1988, where he researched multi-drug resistance. The next year, he served a fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston before completing his fellowship training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Toronto.
His Canadian honors include the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgery Resident’s Prize and the Anne Shepherd Memorial Scholarship at the University of Toronto. Gorenstein is regularly recognized by Castle Connolly as one of the Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area and by Bergen Magazine as one of Bergen County’s Top Doctors. He also has served on a number of hospital committees, such as tumor boards, intensive care committees, and credentialing committees.
