Mesothelioma Center Review – University of Maryland Medical Center

University of Maryland Medical Center

University of Maryland Medical Center MesotheliomaThe University of Maryland (UM) is home to the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, a leading provider of cancer treatment services in Baltimore. The Mesothelioma and Thoracic Oncology Treatment and Research Center at UM offers patients the latest advances in research and treatment for asbestos-related diseases through its world-renowned team of medical experts.

One of the specialized areas of mesothelioma care at the cancer center is the treatment of pleural mesothelioma. Leading experts in pleural mesothelioma utilize a multi-disciplinary approach to provide the best possible prognosis for this challenging diagnosis. The tri-modal approach at the cancer center has been instrumental in improving symptoms and increasing survival rates for those affected by mesothelioma.

The tri-modal approach often, but not always, involves surgery for pleural mesothelioma patients. Surgery consists of a lung-saving procedure called extended pleurectomy-decortication. This procedure allows the surgeon to remove the membrane between the lung and chest cavity and use a substance to eliminate the remaining traces of cancer. Chemotherapy might follow or precede the surgery depending on the patient’s stage of cancer. Radiation therapy is then used to provide additional pain relief to some patients. At UM, patients have access to an advanced form of radiation therapy knows as proton therapy, which delivers more precise radiation to affected areas.

Under the leadership of Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg, M.D., a specialist in pleural mesothelioma, a diverse team of clinicians from the fields of oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology and integrative medicine devise a targeted approach to treat each patient. Dr. Friedberg is the head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at UM. Dr. Friedberg is involved in a number of advance research studies to devise new treatment methods. He is developing a new type of vaccine for tumors, such as mesothelioma, that contains a photosensitizing drug that uses light to counteract harmful cancer cells. Dr. Friedberg has also been investigating clinical techniques to improve surgical procedures, such as a system for sealing air leaks from the lungs and an enhanced technique for airway intubation.

Clinical trials are an important part of the center’s comprehensive treatment plan. They give patients promising and innovative ways to combat their disease with treatments that may not be widely available. There are a number of mesothelioma clinical trials currently taking place at UM. In one clinical trial, researchers are testing whether the combination of two drugs, nivolumab and ipilimumab, are as effective as standard chemotherapy treatment in patients that have been diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Another ongoing trial is comparing drug dosages for various medications in one group with solid cancers that has been previously treated for mesothelioma and another group that has been recently diagnosed with solid cancers and mesothelioma.

Many patients with success stories emphasize the high level of medical care available at UM. Some patients report that the treatment at UM has enhanced their quality of life and prolonged their life expectancy beyond the initial prognosis given to them. The superior care that these patients receive is a product of the coordinated efforts of the surgeons, doctors, nurse navigator and support staff at UM Cancer Center.
