Dr. Edward A. Levine, M.D. is a leading expert in surgical oncology at Wake Forest Comprehensive Cancer Center (WFCCC). He attended the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and completed his residency as Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Levine completed a fellowship in surgical oncology as the University of Illinois and then joined Louisiana State University. He joined Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in 1998. Dr. Levine has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America and was listed in Castel Connelly’s Top Doctors for Cancer.
Dr. Levine is a professor of surgery and chief of the Surgical Oncology Service at WFCCC. He treats a variety of cancers, including melanoma, sarcoma, breast and gastro-intestinal cancers, but he has developed a special interest in applying innovative therapies to the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. Levine is a pioneer in the use of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for the treatment of peritoneal malignancy. As head of the Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC program, Dr. Levine has been successful in enhancing patient outcomes through the performance of this innovative two-step procedure.
Wake Forest has more experience than any other facility in performing cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC to treat peritoneal malignancies. Cytoreductive surgery is the only type of surgery available for patients diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. Levine first became interested in peritoneal mesothelioma after witnessing that patients were experiencing improved outcomes after undergoing cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, as opposed to more traditional forms of treatment. Since then, Dr. Levine has been dedicated to treating eligible patients with HIPEC.
Dr. Levine has amassed 20 years of data that suggests that this combination treatment can measurably improve a patient’s prognosis. Because peritoneal malignances generally do not respond well to conventional chemotherapy, the removal of part of the tumor followed by heated chemotherapy administered directly to the abdomen during surgery results in longer life expectancies for many patients. In his study of over 1000 patients who underwent 1,095 HIPEC procedures, Dr. Levine reported that the median survival rate was 29.9 months with 32.5 percent of patients experiencing a five-year survival rate.
Clinical trials are an important part of Dr. Levine’s dedication to finding a cure for peritoneal mesothelioma. In one study, he and his team analyzed the factors that promote tumor growth from a genetic and scientific viewpoint. In another clinical trial in its second phase, Dr. Levine, along with the University pf Pittsburgh and MD Anderson Cancer Center, are examining the use of certain chemotherapy agents in HIPEC procedures.
Many of Dr. Levine’s patients come from other states to benefit from his expertise in the field of peritoneal mesothelioma. He believes that surgeons and clinicians must collaborate from near and far to tackle this aggressive disease. He also emphasizes that every case should be individually evaluated to determine whether the patient is a candidate for this type of surgical procedure. Dr. Levine is committed to participating in research to find a cure mesothelioma- a disease that is very difficult to treat and is often discovered too late.
