Asbestos Exposure & Mesothelioma in Texas
As the second largest state (geographically) in America, Texas has long been the home to industries of every kind. From oil refineries to shipbuilding, to chemical plants, and product manufacturing, the Lone Star state boasts one of the strongest economies in the South. However, all this industry means an increased chance of asbestos exposure for employees in these industries. Thousands of Texans have suffered from the life-threatening illnesses caused by asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses can take years to present symptoms, so many workers and their family members may suffer from these illnesses long after their initial exposure.
MesoLawyersCare attorneys understand the specifics of asbestos and mesothelioma cases and have been able to recover significant money awards for workers and family members who have suffered as a result of asbestos exposure throughout the state of Texas. Some of the more prominent Texas job sites with high levels of asbestos exposure are discussed below.
1. Alcoa Rockdale Works – Rockdale, TX
Alcoa Corporation is one of the top ten largest producers of aluminum in the world. With the arrival of the Aloca Rockdale Works operation site in 1952, the small town of Rockdale, Texas doubled in size. At the height of its production, the Rockdale site could produce approximately 1.7 million pounds of aluminum per day. Because of its ability to insulate against extreme heat, asbestos was used in many aspects of aluminum production. Employees were exposed to fumes and dust from asbestos used in pipes, pot lines, and machinery brakes. Many family members of workers were also exposed to asbestos when workers would bring the dust home on their clothes. While the Rockdale site closed in 2014, many of the workers from decades before are just now being diagnosed with mesothelioma, a harmful cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
2. Baytown Refinery – Baytown, TX
The Baytown Refinery is a 2,400 acre refinery located in Baytown, Texas (Southeast Texas) on the shores of Tabb Bay. The large refinery was originally founded in 1920, by the Humble Oil Company, now known as Exxon Mobile. The Baytown refinery is one of the largest in the United States, producing 584,000 barrels of oil a day and is the largest employer in the area. Many refineries from the early 1900s used asbestos in their boilers, construction equipment, safety gear, insulation, gaskets and packing. Companies like Exxon Mobile understood the danger of asbestos and yet continued to operate with asbestos-containing equipment, subjecting their employees to exposure. Our firm has successfully represented oil refinery workers, and their family members, who developed mesothelioma as the result of asbestos exposure.
3. Dow Chemical – Freeport, TX
As a large chemical company, Dow Chemical has both a national and international presence in chemical production. Dow Chemical established their Freeport, Texas location opening in 1941. The original purposed of the plant was to extract magnesium from seawater. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, it was an ideal location to conduct this “ocean mining.” Over the years, the company has expanded significantly, and the Freeport site now produces 44% of Dow’s products sold in the United States. Dow Chemical used asbestos in their offices, labs, and production facilities in materials such as pipe insulation, rope, caulk, tape, gaskets, and cement. People employed at Dow Chemical in Freeport, as well as their families, may be at risk for asbestos related illnesses.
4. Parish Electric Generating Station – Thompsons, TX
Located just south of Houston in Thompsons, Texas, The Parish Electric Generating Station is a coal-fired power plant owned and operated by NRG Energy. The plant consists of four natural gas-fired generating units and four coal units, that consume on average 36,000 tons of coal a day. This creates enough energy to supply power to more than one million people in the Houston area. As with other coal-fired power plants built before the 1980s, the Parish Electric Generating Station used asbestos throughout its facilities. This work site used powerful, high-heat equipment that used asbestos materials for insulation and sealing purposes. This asbestos material would often result in dusty asbestos exposures during maintenance and repair activities.
5. Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. – Houston, TX
Uvalde Rock Asphalt Company, founded in 1912, produced rock asphalt and paving materials and manufactured asphalt floor tiles. Prior to the 1980s, asphalt tiles often contained asbestos. These tiles were called vinyl composition tiles (VCT) or vinyl asbestos tiles (VAT), which were used and produced widely between the 1920s through to the early 1980s. From the tile manufacturing process to the heavy machinery involved in the process, asbestos was a part of Uvalde Rock Asphalt’s manufacturing. Exposure to asbestos at Uvalde Rock Asphalt put employees at risk for developing mesothelioma or other asbestos-related illnesses.
