Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma in New Hampshire
Asbestos exposure is common in New Hampshire, as asbestos was used in several industries and construction within the state during the 1900s. Workers were exposed to asbestos at worksites throughout New Hampshire in industries such as paper mills, shipyards, manufacturing and power plants, all which have a history of asbestos use. Though it can take years before the illness is manifested, asbestos exposure can lead to life-threatening diseases including mesothelioma, a serious form of cancer.
If you have developed mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos, you may be eligible for financial compensation for you and your family with the help of MesoLawyersCare attorneys. Some examples of New Hampshire worksites that presented workers (and their family members) with a high risk of asbestos exposure include the following sites:
1. Brown Company – Berlin, NH
Most paper mills built in the 20th century used substantial amounts of asbestos for sealants and insulation for boilers and other machinery because of the high heat generated in the paper making process, and Brown Company was no exception. The Brown Company paper mill in Berlin was built in the early 1900s. The expansive mill complex contained a wood yard, pulp dryers, and newsprint machines. The mill could produce 200 tons of paper per day. The mill operated under Brown Company’s control until the 1980s. Ownership of the mill passed through several different hands, but ultimately closed in 2006. The asbestos used at paper mills like Brown Company left many workers exposed to developing serious asbestos related health problems.
2. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – Portsmouth, NH
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was established in 1800 by president John Adams and holds the title as the U.S. Navy’s oldest, continuously running shipyard. Shipyards and Naval ships, unfortunately, were especially dangerous places to work during the 1900s as significant amounts of asbestos were used in ship construction. Both military and civilian personnel were exposed to asbestos that was used in boiler rooms, pipes, and even in paint in sleeping quarters because it was heat resistant. Many people that worked in the Portsmouth Naval shipyard, and shipyards like it, were likely put at risk of developing terminal asbestos-related health problems later in life.
3. Seabrook Station – Seabrook, NH
Seabrook Station is a nuclear power plant located in Seabrook, New Hampshire. The original plan for the plant, built in the 1970s, included two units. However, due to significant delays in construction, only one unit was completed. That unit has the ability to produce 1,244 megawatts of electricity making it the largest individual electrical generating unit in New England. Although asbestos use in nuclear power plants was phased out in the 1980s, workers involved in the construction of Seabrook Station were likely exposed to asbestos while building the facility. Specifically, asbestos could be found in pipe fittings, insulation, gaskets, turbines, fire doors, and even some floor and ceiling tiles. Later, plant workers were likely exposed to asbestos used in machinery, and materials for insulation and sealing purposes. This proximity to harmful levels of asbestos put the health of those who built and worked at Seabrook Station at risk for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases.
4. Johns-Manville – Nashua, NH
Johns-Manville, founded in the 1860s, manufactures insulation, roofing materials, and other building materials. The company has a long legacy of producing asbestos-containing products which put the health of thousands of employees in jeopardy. Johns-Manville specifically manufactured asbestos pipe insulation, asbestos cement pipe, asbestos shingles, and asbestos roofing materials. Johns-Manville faced significant litigation because the company failed to take the health of their employees into consideration and warn them of the dangers of asbestos—they exposed workers to dangerous levels of asbestos which can cause asbestos related illnesses including asbestosis and mesothelioma. Even employees who worked at Johns-Manville years ago could still be at risk as these diseases often take decades to develop and show. Family members were also put at risk when asbestos-contaminated clothing was worn home.
5. Merrimack Station – Bow, NH
Merrimack Station is a coal and kerosene plant that was owned and operated by Eversource. In early 2018, Merrimack Station, one of the two remaining coal-fired plants in New Hampshire, sold to Atlas Holdings. The plant has two units that can produce nearly 500 megawatts of power, one built in 1960 and the other in 1968. Merrimack Station has been subject to criticism for severe pollution that caused harm to surrounding community members. In addition, plant workers were harmed when exposed to asbestos while on the job. As was common in power plants built in the 1900s, building materials for the Merrimack Station facility and equipment like boilers, generators, and piping were often insulated with or had parts containing asbestos because it was heat resistant. Workers exposed to asbestos at Merrimack Station have developed asbestos related illnesses, as have family members who had household contact from the asbestos dust brought home on work clothes.
