Mesothelioma Center Review – UCLA

Mesothelioma Center Review – UCLA

UCLA MesotheliomaAt UCLA, mesothelioma treatment encompasses a range of standard and unconventional treatment options for various types of mesothelioma. UCLA’s Comprehensive Mesothelioma Program uses innovative surgical techniques and postoperative treatments to improve patient outcomes. The clinicians at UCLA focus on treating as mesothelioma as a persistent health issue that benefits from consistent and frequent therapeutic regimens to inhibit further cancer growth.

UCLA’s Comprehensive Mesothelioma Program relies on a multi-faceted approach to shrinking tumors and treating them over the long-term. Many patients are eligible for a surgical procedure that removes the tumor from the chest and leaves other structures untouched. Surgeons at UCLA have extensive experience in this surgical procedure known as pleurectomy and decortication, which results in the preservation of the lung. In other facilities, surgeons choose to remove the lung, which may not result in optimal quality of life following surgery. During surgery, surgeons are also able to administer other therapies, such as interleukin 4 (IL-4) toxin, to counteract the affected cells. In addition to these procedures, surgeons may use lasers, bronchial and esophageal stents, and technology enhanced robotic surgery.

Following surgery, clinicians offer radiation therapy that is designed to prevent damage to the spared lung while attacking remaining cancerous cells. Various radiation therapies include stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and radiosurgery with the Novalis Tx Image-guided system. To treat the cancerous cells that remain, UCLA offers investigational treatment and clinical trials. In some cases, immunotherapy and targeted biologic agents are used in addition to conventional therapies.

UCLA’s philosophy to treating mesothelioma is directed toward slowing or stopping the progression of the cancer without exposing the patient to numerous high doses of toxins that may result from frequent chemotherapy treatments. Under the direction of Dr. Cameron, M.D., clinicians at UCLA opt to treat patients with new approaches, such as low-dose interferon alpha, to inhibit the resurgence of cancerous tumors with minimal side effects. If tumors reappear after surgery, clinicians at UCLA may use cryoablation as an outpatient therapy. Cryoablation, which is the process of freezing affected cells, has been tolerated well by many patients.

UCLA’s Comprehensive Mesothelioma Program offer specialized treatment for a rare form of mesothelioma known as sarcomatoid mesothelioma. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma and accounts for approximately 10 percent of all mesothelioma cases. This type of mesothelioma produces aggressive tumors that are very challenging to diagnose and treat. Clinicians at UCLA use chemotherapy agents that are routinely used for other types of sarcomas to treat sarcomatoid mesothelioma. They have discovered that these agents produce better results than the standard chemotherapy course used for mesothelioma patients. Generally, clinicians have found patients who present with sarcomatoid mesothelioma have an improved prognosis when treated with surgery and radiation after chemotherapy.
