Dr. Bradford Perez is an oncologist with the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Bay, Florida, where he specializes in the treatment of lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymoma patients through radiation therapy. He is known for implementing a number of advanced methods, including image-guided radiation therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy, in the treatment of various lung and thoracic cancers. Perez also has contributed to a number of clinical trials and published medical reviews involving lung cancer therapies.
Perez graduated from Duke University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in radiation oncology. As a third-year medical student in 2008, Perez wrote a letter to his dean expressing concerns about the statistics and methods used by a medical researcher at Duke. This letter was ignored until several professional statisticians raised similar concerns, calling the research “fraudulent.” The researcher ultimately resigned, but Perez’s letter was an early indication of his commitment to accuracy and integrity as a medical professional.
He has since gone on to lead or contribute to a number of clinical trials and published medical reports on cancer therapies, particularly those involving the use of radiation to target cancerous cells. While much of his focus has been on mesothelioma treatment, his work deals with lung cancers in general.
One of Perez’s specialties is the use of immunotherapeutics to treat mesothelioma and other lung cancers, in addition to the use of personalized information about the molecular makeup of each patient’s tumors. Immunotherapy involves either suppressing or inducing (or otherwise manipulating) a patient’s immune response in order to treat disease, which has shown tremendous potential for cancer treatment. Generally speaking, immunotherapy encourages the body’s own immune cells (such as lymphocytes) to target the abnormal antigens — molecules that provoke an immune response – expressed by tumor cells.
In addition to conducting research and publishing his findings, Perez regularly sees patients with a variety of serious lung cancers and thoracic diseases (primarily mesothelioma). His radiation therapies include cutting edge techniques such as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). SBRT uses imaging to better target a tumor for radiation treatment, with the goal of sparing more healthy tissue than is typically damaged by radiation. IMRT similarly uses imaging to target treatments, but through the use of a computer-controlled device that delivers radiation in doses that match the shape of the tumor.
Perez has worked at the Moffitt Cancer Center since July 2015, where he regularly sees patients. In 2016, the non-profit lung cancer research organization Prelude to a Cure named him the first recipient of its Barbara Bauer Lung Cancer Innovative Research Grant.
