Dr. Dennis Wigle, M.D., PH. D, is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Chair of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Dr. Wigle received his BSc from the University of Waterloo in 1989. He then went on to obtain a MSc from the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Queen’s University. He received a PhD also from the Department of Anatomy and cell Biology, Queen’s University. He then continued his education receiving a MD from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. A Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Molecular and Medical Genetics at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He is Certified by Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Canada in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Wigle is an active researcher. In his research laboratory, he is involved in two important project areas. He is focused on gene expression bio markers used for molecular staging of lung cancers. By defining what are the steps at the molecular level that transform a normal cell through dysplasia to malignancy, new areas of interventional treatment can then be explored. Understanding this process can then help to develop new treatments and technologies. His second focus is the growth and development of the normal lung and potentially using lung stem cells for treatment.
The Regenerative Medicine Biotrust is overseen by Dr. Wigle. This consists of a massive library of genomic data, cells, tissue, blood and other specimens at the Mayo Clinic. This is what scientists see as the future of medicine. To be able to individualize medicine with a team that includes physicians, research scientists, engineers, mathematicians, data analysis is how new treatment options will be moved from the lab to the bedside.
In addition to his work as a surgeon, researcher, Dr. Wigle is also active in professional organizations including the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
The mesothelioma community is fortunate to have a talented physician and researcher with Dr. Wigle and the team at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota.
