Dr. Harvey Pass is the director of thoracic surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center. Dr. Pass is the Stephen E. Banner Professor of Thoracic Oncology, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Professor, Department of Surgery. He is the Chief of Thoracic Oncology NYU Cancer Center, Vice Chair Research NYUHC as well as the Chief Division Thoracic Surgery NYULMC, Dr. Pass leads the Early Detection Research Network Biomarker Discovery Laboratory for Mesothelioma funded by NCI. He also oversees the NCI funded Mesothelioma Pathogenesis Program Project.
Education
Dr. Pass attended Johns Hopkins University and continued to medical school at Duke University. He completed his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and University of South Carolina. His fellowship was at National Cancer Institute in cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Pass is well known for his research and work related to Mesothelioma. In 1986, he was one of the first ones to study the use of intraoperative photodynamic therapy also known as PDT. He also investigated adding chemotherapy after mesothelioma after surgery. In 1996, he collaborated with colleagues at the Karmanos Cancer Center at Wayne State University. This study was able to identify a protein that can help doctors screen for early detection and more successful treatments of specific cancers. Dr. Pass is also part of the group of individuals who help start the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation in 1998.
Dr. Pass has held numerous appointments. 1982-1983 he was the Assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In 1983, he had a three-year Senior Staff Fellowship training program in the Thoracic Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. After completing this fellowship, he stayed for ten years at the National Cancer Institute becoming the head of Thoracic Oncology at NCI. While maintaining this position he also held the Assistant Professor of Surgery at University of Health Sciences in Maryland. Dr. Pass participates as a role member of the IASLC which began in 1995. This role includes being a member of IASLC’s Scientific Program Committee and Board of Directors, chair of the Publications Committee, associate editor for the journal of Thoracic Oncology and the executive editor of the IASLC’s Multidisciplinary Approach to Thoracic Oncology.
Dr. Pass currently serves as Chief of Thoracic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. He oversees a laboratory at Bellevue Hospital where his research work is sponsored by National Cancer Institute. His new Mesothelioma Pathogenesis Program Project. He has also established a three-year Thoracic Training Program at NYU.
Dr. Pass has produced more that 72 articles related to mesothelioma. He is passionate about treating Mesothelioma and raising awareness. He has served as a board member of The Lung Cancer Alliance and he chairs the Scientific Advisory Board for the MARF
Dr. Harvey Pass is the recipient of the merit Award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
Dr. Pass is in his fourth decade of working with mesothelioma patients. He is passionate about finding new treatment for mesothelioma and he is also passionate about raising awareness about asbestos. The Mesothelioma community is fortunate to have such a devoted physician who has kept Mesothelioma at his forefront of his career. Along with his many accomplishments Dr. Pass continues to research and train the next generation of scientists to come closer to a cure for this deadly disease.
